Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu Cirencester-Japanese Tradition and Modern Day Meet

Training at the RAU
Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu Cirencester-Japanese Tradition and Modern Day Meet

Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu is a national organisation with clubs in Leicester, London and Cardiff to name a few. It is a self defence martial art that focuses on using understading of balance, leverage, distance to defend yourself rather than direct exchanges of aggression.

The Cirencester club isn´t as large, but meets once a week at CrossFit. Recently, Cirencester proved to be the best location for high grades from other clubs to meet for an AGM and seminar. I was fortunate to be invited to the Sunday seminar and take part. This was a technical lesson, where subtleties of movement were highlighted.

The initial movements were those of break falling to the side, forward and backwards. Afterwards, the fine details of these movements were applied to foot sweeps. It was the avoidance of opposing energy directly that we had to understand. With a break fall, the idea is that you are going down anyway, but manage to redirect the momentum into a safe landing. With a throw, a similar idea is used by breaking the opponents balance after they have also unbalanced themselves.

This was exemplified by how we blocked, redirected or caught punches before a throw was attempted. The commitment of weight by the opponent is what makes it a lot easier to move them.

Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu meets at 19:30 to 21:30 every Monday evening at CrossFit Cirencester. Joint locks, throws and other self defence techniques are drilled for every ability. At £5 a lesson, this offers great value! For more information contact Tom on cirenaiuchi@gmail.com, like on Facebook here or visit http://aiuchi.net/viewclub.php?c=2414

Ciren Judo Starts Yellow Belt Challenge for Eligible 11-25 Year Olds

Are you eligible
Cirencester Judo Club, which has been going since the 70s, has taken on the Yellow Belt Challenge! This allows people from 11-25 whose parents or themselves are in receipt of financial aid to take part in sport and exercise. The Yellow Belt Challenge helps fund eligible people up to yellow belt, which is the third belt in the Judo ranking.

The benefits of judo are multiple. It boosts an individuals quality of social life, health and self defence. Break falls (learning to roll or land safely), trips, throws, joint locks and chokes are all learned in this sport. Though it may sound brutal, these techniques are used in a way that has
been proven to reduce injury.
A shrimping drill, how to move along the floor quickly.

Introduced by Jigoro Kano in Japan, everyone on the side line of grappling training was asked which technique had injured them. Through this process of deduction, it was discovered which techniques were the safest and thus easiest to practice. This
Kano, who founded Judo.
meant Judo practitioners had the edge over those who knew nastier techniques, but couldn't practice them. It resulted in a contest for the Kyoto Police to decide which martial art to teach it's officers. The Kodokan judo team dominated the other ju jutsu teams because they were so well practiced.

The benefit of Judo is recognised all over the world, but practioners, great individuals and institutions such as universities. President Theodore Roosevelt was so taken by judo, he took 6 months of private lessons from one of Kano's emissaries.

Can Your Building Help? New Street Layout Brings out Charity's Ingenuity

Still open despite a lot of ongoing work!
When Helping People in Need Gets Tough
Sue Ryder Cirencester has been affected first hand by the new town centre layout. Developments meant a real drop in donations. People simply didn't park outside the shop to drop things off anymore. The classy boutique specialising in high quality previously loved items, is well known for representing those who need palliative care after terminal diagnosis. Now they have found a great way to boost donations.

Donation Stations

If you can't change something you have to work around it, and Sue Ryder decided this was their best course of action. They have set up Donation Stations at three large businesses in Cirencester. St James Place, Kallidus and Piller. These stations allow staff to synergise their giving with their work timetable. They simply bring donations to work and leave them at the station.

If you are in a large business or frequently used building (gym, school etc) perhaps you could help set up a Sue Ryder Donation Station there?

If you want to set up a donation station, contact Evan@cirencester-scene.co.uk so we can cover your generous contribution!
